NHAI to Improve FASTag Accuracy by Mandating Vehicle Registration Validation for Banks
NHAI has taken an initiative to improve the FASTag accuracy by mandating vehicle registration validation for issuer banks. In order to improve the accuracy and dependability of data in the electronic toll collecting system, the state owned NHAI announced Wednesday that it has instructed all FASTag issuer banks to begin validating vehicle registration numbers immediately.
The choice comes after complaints about cases where the VRN recorded by FASTag readers does not match the vehicle number plate’s real registration number, reported by PIB in a tweet. It has been noted that a significant proportion of these mismatches are related to FASTags that were released before they were officially listed in the VAHAN database, according to the reports.
At that time, validation procedures were comparatively few and depended more on human procedures, which could result in discrepancies in the data used to identify vehicles, as per the PIB report.

According to NHAI, it has stressed the utmost importance of accurately mapping VRN with FASTag, particularly in light of future technology driven measures like Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling.
Accurate and verified vehicle identification data will be essential to enforcement measures under the MLFF framework, such as the delivery of electronic notices (e-Notices) to vehicles that are out of compliance.
