Social media’s attention has been drawn to Zoho’s co-founder and former CEO, Sridhar Vembu, who offered some straightforward advise to anyone interested in starting a business. Engineers, scientists and doctors in the transition period of becoming entrepreneurs, Vembu said in a Wednesday on X (formerly Twitter) post, needed to confront rejection head on in order to learn how people and real life function.
Vembu advised this group to conduct numerous sales calls since without sales, there is no business. Vembu thought that individuals could discover themselves and the company by expressing themselves. Vembu went on to say that the experience would aid people in improving their communication abilities and job performance.
If you are an engineer or scientist or doctor turning to business, the first thing I would suggest is “Please go on a lot of sales calls, face rejection if necessary, but persist”. You will develop better communication skills as you realise that explaining your ideas is not so… — Sridhar Vembu (@svembu) August 26, 2026
Sridhar Vembu’s Post:
If you are an engineer or scientist or doctor turning to business, the first thing I would suggest is “Please go on a lot of sales calls, face rejection if necessary, but persist”. You will develop better communication skills as you realise that explaining your ideas is not so easy. You will develop respect for sales people. You may even become good at business! There is no such thing as a business without selling something. Sometimes the most obvious thing has to be said!
Online users concurred with Vembu’s appraisal as the post became popular, pointing out that sales instilled humility and patience, two crucial qualities for an ambitious entrepreneur.
