Severe Storm Strikes Toronto and GTA, Causing Flooding in Transit, Roads and Homes

Many parts of Toronto and the GTA experience flooding in homes, transit and roads. According to Canada’s media reports, on Wednesday, a strong, multi-wave thunderstorm system hit Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), bringing more than 100 mm of torrential rain, wind speeds of up to 85 km/h and heavy hail.

The region also experienced a heavy hailstorm. The strong weather system caused significant flash floods in residential basements, major motorways and transit systems.

After a strong thunderstorm brought heavy rain, strong winds and heavy hail to Toronto, the city has been hit by the storm’s fury, leaving at least 45,000 people without power, say reports. The storm caused extensive floods, knocked down trees and power lines, closed highways and interrupted public transportation.

Many planes at Toronto Pearson International Airport were delayed or cancelled and the emergency room at Michael Garron Hospital was flooded. City authorities activated the emergency operations center as crews dealt with fallen trees, debris, power disruptions and floods throughout the area.
