Pakistan and Afghanistan Agree to Ceasefire After Deadly Border Clashes

Pakistan and Afghanistan declared a temporary ceasefire on Wednesday after fierce overnight fighting left dozens dead and wounded along their volatile border. The truce, set to last 48 hours, follows escalating hostilities that have strained relations between the neighboring nations once bound by strategic ties.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said both sides would “make sincere efforts through dialogue” to resolve the complex standoff, while the Taliban government claimed the ceasefire came at Islamabad’s insistence.

The clashes, spanning Afghanistan’s Spin Boldak and Pakistan’s Chaman districts, saw heavy shelling and civilian casualties. Each side blamed the other for initiating the violence. Pakistani officials reported six soldiers killed, while Afghan sources claimed higher tolls.

The flare-up marks another flashpoint in the fraught relationship between the Taliban and Islamabad, as accusations persist over cross-border militant sanctuaries.

Regional observers warn the truce may prove fragile unless broader political negotiations take root.
