Torrential rain brought significant flooding to parts of New York and New Jersey. Two people were confirmed dead after the heavy rainfall on 30 and 31 October, 2025.

New York City Floods Create Havoc

Cyclone Montha in Andhra Pradesh, Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica and Cuba, and now, deadly downpour slashes New York City. October has been such a dreadful month for people living in India and abroad. According to NYC Emergency Management, the National Weather Service reported that 1.8 inches of rain fell in Central Park on Thursday. It has surpassed the 1917 record of 1.80 inches in Central Park and 1.97 inches at LaGuardia Airport, breaking the 1955 record. 

As per the reports by local media, two people, aged 39 and 43, were reported dead. One body was found in the flooded basement in Brooklyn, whereas the other was submerged in the boiler room in Manhattan. Amidst the floods, the New York citizens began raising concerns about infrastructural damage and community safety.

New York City Floods Create Havoc


The deadly storm and heavy downpour brought trees down in Philadelphia and barges ashore in New Jersey. High winds caused power outages, leaving approximately 15000 people without power during the storm’s peak.

Rainy weather caused the cancellation of over 1,200 flights in the United States, with New York City’s three airports facing the most significant impact. The record-breaking rainfall was caused by an inland storm system that moved through the Northeast. The storm was also one of the factors that kept Hurricane Melissa away from the U.S.
