An Indian origin doctor in the US has to pay around 14 million USD to settle a medical fraud case. To resolve charges of widespread fraud in healthcare related to excessive medical treatments and false billing, the reports stated.

The doctor, named Jitesh Patel, runs Atlanta based clinic, Advanced Urology. To settle allegations under the False Claims Act and the Georgia False Medicaid Claims Act, Jitesh Patel and his practice, Advanced Urology Inc., as well as related organizations, will pay the settlement sum, according to a news release from the US Department of Justice.

Authorities alleged that the practice billed Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE and other federal programmes for treatments that were either not provided or not medically necessary.

Two whistleblower complaints, one from a former employee and the other from a former doctor at the facility, initiated the inquiry. Those who claimed that the clinic placed more importance on making money than on treating patients. They claimed that practically all new patients were subjected to invasive procedures, frequently without a valid medical reason.
