Donald Trump, the former U.S. president, was formally nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s prime minister, during his visit to Tokyo on Tuesday. The nomination marks the second such endorsement he has received in recent days, following an earlier nomination by Hun Manet of Cambodia.
At a signing ceremony held at Tokyo’s Akasaka Palace, Prime Minister Takaichi praised Trump’s “historic achievement” in mediating conflicts across Asia and the Middle East. She highlighted his role in a recent cease-fire deal between Thailand and Cambodia and other international diplomatic efforts as central to her decision.
Beyond the symbolic nomination, Trump and Prime Minister Takaichi also inked a bilateral agreement focused on critical minerals and rare earth cooperation an initiative aimed at reducing dependence on China. The move underscores Tokyo’s ambition to usher in a “new golden era” of U.S.–Japan relations.
Trump’s expanding list of nominations from countries including Israel, Pakistan, Thailand and Gabon reflects his cultivated image as a global mediator. However, supporters caution that a nomination does not guarantee victory, and his actual impact on lasting peace agreements remains under debate.
