After Ali Khamenei’s Death, Is His Son Mojtaba a Likely Successor as Iran’s Supreme Leader?
Iran’s political future has been thrown into uncertainty following reports that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a United States–Israel strike. Iranian state news agency IRNA and state television confirmed the death of the 86-year-old leader, while US President Donald Trump described the development as a “turning point,” saying it gives Iranians their “greatest chance” to reclaim their country.
Despite the reported deaths of Iran’s top leadership figures, analysts caution that regime change is far from guaranteed. According to the Washington DC–based Middle East Institute, Khamenei had reportedly identified three potential successors all senior clerics in an effort to ensure the continuation of a hardline leadership and to “purify” the regime.
Who is Mojtaba Khamenei?
Mojtaba Khamenei, the second-eldest son of the late supreme leader, is a mid-ranking cleric who has long been rumored to be a potential successor. He is believed to have close ties with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and reportedly served in the armed forces during the Iran-Iraq war.
Though he has largely operated behind the scenes, Mojtaba is said to have wielded considerable influence within the system, acting as a gatekeeper in his father’s office and playing a key role in internal political dynamics.
However, a New York Times report indicated that while Mojtaba was once viewed as a frontrunner, he was not among the three senior clerics reportedly shortlisted by Khamenei last year.
What Happens Next?
Experts warn that appointing Mojtaba could spark political turbulence, potentially undermining the stability that Khamenei reportedly sought by identifying alternative successors in advance. The Middle East Institute suggests that Khamenei’s broader ambitions for the Islamic Republic may ultimately work against his son’s selection.
As Iran forms an interim governing structure and the Assembly of Experts weighs its decision, the country faces a pivotal moment one that could reshape its leadership and influence the broader stability of the Middle East.
