The Philippines have declared a state of emergency amid Typhoon Kalmaegi. Till now, the death toll has crossed 100 and many citizens of the Philippines are missing. As per the latest update, Kalmaegi moved westwards over the South China Sea and towards Vietnam on Wednesday by 5 PM. The typhoon has caused damage to properties. According to disaster database EM-DAT, typhoon Kalmaegi is the deadliest typhoon of 2025.
According to Reuters, the death toll has been recorded as 114, but by Thursday afternoon, some reports suggest the death toll had reached 142 or above that. More than 100 people are missing. Right now, the Typhoon has moved forward to Vietnam.
As Kalmaegi approached neighboring Vietnam, where there was growing concern that the typhoon may exacerbate the harm of a week of flooding that has killed 47 people, its wind speeds were rising on Thursday. The national weather bureau predicts that the typhoon will make landfall in central Vietnam late on Thursday, bringing with it waves that could reach heights of eight meters (26 feet) and strong storm surges.
According to the Philippine News Agency, it may develop into a super typhoon and hit the northern or central Luzon region on November 10, perhaps at or near its greatest intensity. In a statement released on Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha described Kalmaegi as a very abnormal storm and urged local governments to handle it as urgent and dangerous.
Over 500,000 Filipinos relocated to other safer locations. While the national civil defense agency reported 114 deaths on Thursday, that total did not account for the 28 more fatalities recorded by Cebu provincial authorities, as per some reports. This week, unprecedented floodwaters swept through Cebu province’s cities and towns, destroying riverside slums, vehicles, and even huge cargo containers.
Two significant storms, including Super Typhoon Ragasa, devastated the Philippines in September, killing 14 people in neighboring Taiwan by ripping the roofs off of structures in its wake.
