Microsoft Launches 4th Cloud Region in Hyderabad to Boost AI Capacity

On Monday, as part of its 20.5 billion USD investment commitment to the country’s digital and AI infrastructure, Microsoft officially opened its fourth Indian cloud region in Hyderabad.

The India South Central region, which became widely available on August 6, joins the company’s existing regions in Chennai, Pune and Mumbai. According to Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, the Hyderabad factory uses air cooled chillers rather than conventional water based systems for cooling, which means it uses almost no water, reports PTI.

He emphasized that by 2035, the country’s data center capacity, which is currently about 2 GW, will increase to 6-7 GW, with over 100 billion USD in committed investments. India will develop into a hub for AI infrastructure for Asia, the Global South and itself, according to him.

The firm stated that the recently launched India South Central region has a three zone architecture that is intended to support robust operations and scale with demand. In addition, Microsoft announced that all of its cloud regions in India are now AI enabled, boasting AI capable hardware, energy efficient cooling systems and the platform infrastructure necessary to handle demanding AI operations.

Over the next few months, more Azure and AI capabilities, like Microsoft Foundry, are expected to be available in the Hyderabad area, which presently provides a wide range of Azure services.
