In a striking show of protest, two decorated Paralympic athletes from Madhya Pradesh have threatened to return their prestigious Arjuna Awards, accusing the state government of failing to deliver on repeated assurances of employment.
Among them is Kapil Parmar, a 25-year-old para-judo player who etched history by clinching India’s first-ever Paralympic medal in judo. Alongside him is Prachi Yadav, 30, the country’s first paracanoe athlete, a 2020 Paralympian, 2022 World Cup bronze medalist, and an Arjuna Awardee.
Both athletes allege that despite their achievements bringing international recognition to India, the state government has not honored promises of providing them with government jobs. The duo has warned that unless action is taken soon, they will return their national honours in protest.
Their move underscores the growing frustration among sportspersons who say that while medals are celebrated, long-term support and livelihood opportunities remain elusive.
