BCCI has stated that team India captain Shubman Gill was taken to the hospital for evaluation after suffering a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa. He was kept under observation and released the next day. Shubman has been reacting well to the medical care provided and will join the team in Guwahati on November 19, 2025. The BCCI medical staff will continue to monitor Shubman, and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be made in accordance with that.
India lost badly by 30 runs in the fourth innings against South Africa in its attempt to chase down the target of 124 runs, and Shubman Gill, who did not come out to bat in the second innings, was absent. Rishabh Pant will lead India in the second Test if Gill is not available, and one of Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, or Nitish Reddy will take his place in the starting lineup.
Towards the end of Day 2 at Eden Gardens, Gill seemed to have a whiplash-like reaction and grabbed the back of his neck, unable to move his head. Soon after, he slogs swept Simon Harmer for four. He was brought to a private hospital while wearing a cervical collar as a precaution after suffering an injury and retiring after only three pitches.
