With a stunning match on Tuesday, India defeated England by 6 wickets in the first ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham, to take a 1-0 lead in the three match series. England were bowled out for 258 and India comfortably chased down the target with 262/7 in 45.2 overs to secure the victory.
Highlights of the Match:
After being asked to bat first, England found themselves struggling at 107/6. A resilient 121 run partnership between Joe Root (76 not out) and Liam Dawson (68) helped the hosts post a respectable total of 258 before being bundled out in the 48th over. Axar Patel was the pick of the Indian bowlers, taking crucial wickets to dismantle the English middle order.
In response, captain Shubman Gill anchored India’s pursuit with a fantastic 80 run inning before leaving the game due to cramps. Axar Patel (57 not out) and Washington Sundar (52 not out) put together an unbroken 102 run partnership, despite a brief middle order wobble that saw the quick dismissals of senior batsmen. India won with over four overs remaining thanks to Sundar’s game winning runs.
