An X user called Shabaz started the debate after posting about a meeting with a Rapido rider during a trip to Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta. A routine journey quickly evolved into an enlightening talk regarding money, family duties and life in one of India’s priciest cities.
Shabaz stated that the man said he was a software engineer during their chat. Much to his amazement, the rider shared that he, too, was working as a software developer for an international corporation. There were many posts where we learned that many successful corporate employees left their jobs and started gig work, but this one stunned the users.
Today, while traveling to Bannerghatta, I booked a Rapido. The rider, a 35-year old, started speaking in Kannada, realized mine wasn’t great, and switched to English. The rider also admitted to being a software developer at a multinational firm with a six-figure income. He spent his weekends transporting passengers through Rapido to supplement his salary, even though he worked at a high paying business. According to the rider, the cause was straightforward. He is married, has a young child and wants to offer his family more financial stability.
His post swiftly went viral online, sparking discussion over the challenges middle class households confront in major metropolitan regions, including inflation, school costs and housing prices.
