Thermal Power Plant Collapse in Chennai: 9 Dead, Several Injured

On Tuesday, an arch under construction at the Ennore site collapsed from a height of nearly 30 feet, trapping several migrant workers, according to preliminary reports. The injured were taken to Stanley Government Hospital in North Chennai for treatment, among whom one worker is reported to be in serious condition.

Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO), visited Stanley Government Hospital to meet the injured workers and assess the situation.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. He also announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for each family and ordered arrangements to transport the bodies to their home states.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragic collapse in Chennai. The Prime Minister’s Office, in a post on X, said: “Saddened by the mishap due to the collapse of a building in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families in this difficult hour. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

An ex gratia of ₹2 lakh from PMNRF will be given to the next of kin of each deceased, while the injured will receive ₹50,000, the statement added.
