PM Narendra Modi Flags Off Namo Bharat RRTS and India’s Fastest Meerut Metro
At the Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi signaled the start of the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat Train. India’s changing and innovative transportation will be defined by the nation’s first Namo Bharat Train and its fastest Meerut Metro.
On Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 6 PM, passenger service began. The last portions of the 82 kilometer Delhi to Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and the 23 kilometer Meerut Metro were officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.
The Delhi to Ghaziabad to Meerut corridor’s Namo Bharat services are being expanded from New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan and from Meerut South to Modipuram. The Namo Bharat Website states that the Meerut Metro will connect Meerut South and Modipuram, covering all designated stops along the route, while the Namo Bharat will operate between Sarai Kale Khan (Delhi) and Modipuram (Uttar Pradesh).

India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System, Namo Bharat, has a design speed of 180 km/h, enabling the fastest connectivity between Delhi and important urban centers like Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar and Meerut. The 23 kilometer Meerut Metro route has 13 stations, including interchange points at Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram, which facilitate easy connections between metro and RRTS services.
With a maximum operating speed of about 120 kilometers per hour, Meerut Metro is the fastest metro network in the nation. The reports indicate that the entire distance is covered in just 30 minutes. The prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, stated that Uttar Pradesh is undergoing a transformation into a manufacturing center and the cornerstone for the state’s first semiconductor facility was just recently established.
Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, stated during the event that the initiatives that were started today would be of tremendous help to the state’s citizens.
