The government have come up with new rules regarding highway travel as the government to enforce the no cash policy at the toll booths from April 10. Additionally, the government is also ending the informal custom of providing toll waivers based on ID cards to officials driving their own cars, according to the reports.

From April 10, 2026, the Union Ministry of Road Transportation and Highways has declared that cash will not be accepted at any national highway toll plaza, making FASTag or UPI the only way to pay for your passage.

The regulation is designed specifically to address the queuing issue that has caused millions of motorists on roadways to become increasingly irritated by toll plazas every day, highlighted by the media reports.

The FASTag Annual Pass is still a useful option for those who use the highways often. The pass, which allows for limitless crossings across the national highway network, is priced at Rs. 3,075 from April 1, 2026, which represents a minor 2.5% rise in accordance with the Wholesale Price Index.

Drivers who don’t have a legitimate FASTag won’t be immediately stopped, but they will have to pay for it. Although it will cost 1.25 times the average toll rate, UPI will be available as a backup. These changes are important to note down.

The rules of the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, under which the highway authority may restrict access to that section of the road, are applicable to those who do not use digital payment methods at all, according to the reports.
