Pune News: Teen Killed after Leopard Attack, Villagers Blamed Forest Officers
A teen got attacked and later killed by a leopard in Pune. The incident shook the villagers and left their family devastated. The leopard was hiding under the sugarcane field while the 13-year-old boy was playing. The leopard escaped immediately before the villagers arrived at the scene. The incident happened in Shirur, Pune, on November 2, according to PTI. The incident sparked massive anger and many villagers have protested in demand for security. On the Pune-Nashik route at the Manchar bypass, hundreds of people held a rasta roko demonstration, demanding gun licenses to kill leopards.
As per the reports, the family of the boy, who was killed in the attack, is demanding justice from the government, saying that they will not perform the last rites of their son until the leopard is captured and killed.
On Monday, a demonstration on the Pune-Nashik highway at the Manchar bypass, organized by locals from the Junnar, Shirur, Ambegaon, and Khed tehsils in Pune district, lasted till late at night. Villagers are now protesting in heavy numbers.
Protest for Justice:
After a string of deadly assaults, the townspeople asked for gun licenses to kill leopards. The demonstration caused traffic along the highway, and the municipal government worked to clear the roadway and assist with traffic flow. The locals protested against the forest agency, claiming they were not doing enough to protect people in rural regions or manage the leopard population. They chanted slogans and carried posters, as per the media reports.
Following the death of a 13-year-old child in a leopard attack in Pune district, enraged residents set a forest department car on fire the next day, prompting authorities to issue orders on Monday to capture and kill the maneater. As per the recent report, five teams of sharpshooters are deployed to kill the predator, Forest officials have told the PTI.
