Indian Railways to now revamp a 40 year old reservation system in the coming August, according to the reports. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw instructed officials on Thursday to make sure that the reservation system is improved without causing any disruption to travelers.
The Railway Ministry is attempting to implement essential reforms in the 40-year-old passenger seat reservation system in order to increase its capacity and make it more user-friendly and accessible, reported by PTI.
In a press statement, the ministry said, “Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a review meeting with officials today at Rail Bhawan and instructed them to make sure that passengers do not experience any inconvenience as they transition from the 40 year old reservation system to the improved system.”
Timeline:
The Passenger Reservation System (PRS) of Indian Railways was introduced in 1986 and has seen numerous improvements throughout the last 40 years. By using a range of technologies, the national carrier has now increased the system’s capacity. In 2002, Indian Railways introduced its online ticket reservation service. Online platforms are currently used to fulfill around 88% of the nation’s overall demand for train tickets.
RailOne, Indian Railways’ super app, which was launched in 2025, currently employs Artificial Intelligence (AI) to make more accurate predictions on ticket confirmations. The app tells the user if it’s likely that a wait listed ticket will be confirmed when they reserve it.
What’s New?
This app integrates a wide range of capabilities that cover nearly all railway services, including booking, cancellation and refunds for platform, reserved and unreserved tickets. In addition, it offers real time information on ticket waiting status, train schedules, live train operating status, platform data, coach location and passenger assistance services.
