A massive passenger theft has recently opened up and the loss is massive. According to a report, Indian Railways has lost Rs. 1.27 crore bedsheets, blankets, pillows and towels. This items are served by the Railways for the passenger comfort are now stolen by many.

As per the Indian Express report, according to an investigation, passengers were the primary perpetrators of the theft of at least 1.27 crore bedroll pieces between January 2022, when bedroll services were completely restored after the Covid-19 pandemic and May 2026.

The news was revealed as a result of the outlet filing a Right to Information (RTI) request with each of the 69 divisions of the Indian Railways. 54 divisions from 16 of the 18 Railway zones submitted responses. According to RTI statistics, as quoted by The Indian Express, bedroll contractors lost around Rs. 104.51 crore as a result of the theft during the four years.

With 46.54 lakh face towels reported stolen over four years, they were the most popular goods among those that were taken. Then came 12.95 lakh blankets, 23.59 lakh pillow coverings, and 41.13 lakh bedsheets. Pillows were the least stolen item, with 2.76 lakh reported missing, perhaps due to their larger size.
