Friday afternoon saw Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experience heavy rain and thunderstorms as a result of ideal monsoon conditions and a developing weather system in eastern India that continued to have an impact on the area.

According to meteorologists, the rain was caused by an active monsoon trough that was passing close to the NCR, creating conditions that were favorable for ongoing rainfall.

Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several regions of Delhi. The red alert indicates that more than 204 mm of rain will fall in a single day or 24 hours. Over the next several days, including the Independence Day weekend, the IMD has predicted intermittent to heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms and strong winds. In Delhi and its surrounding towns, the moist weather circumstances are expected to last through August 19.

It is also anticipated that weather conditions will stay hazy on Independence Day, which falls on Saturday this year. The Red Fort’s flag-hoisting ceremony is predicted to be partly cloudy, with a chance of mild rain or brief showers in certain regions.
