In Madhya Pradesh, now you can see India’s first ever wildlife safe road with table top red marking. The road has been introduced on National Highway 45 (NH-45) in Madhya Pradesh by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The objective of the initiative is to strike a balance between road infrastructure expansion and wildlife protection, with a focus on the ecologically vulnerable Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve and Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary, in order to lessen the number of accidents between animals and vehicles.

The project also supports the Green Highways program of the NHAI, which aims to advance sustainable infrastructure development. Furthermore, this strategy may be duplicated on other routes if it works.

The portion of NH-45 with the red markings runs for 11.96 kilometers between Bhopal and Jabalpur. The highway passes through dense forest regions, where animals frequently cross the road, around 60 kilometers outside of Jabalpur.

According to the Madhya Pradesh Tourism X account post, this red layer, which is 5 mm thick, warns motorists when they enter an area that is susceptible to wildlife. Because of its slightly higher texture, it naturally slows down cars and aids in lowering the number of animal-vehicle collisions, allowing animals to move safely throughout the woods.

To facilitate the safe passage of animals under the roadway, NHAI has additionally built 25 specialized underpasses. Additionally, speed detection equipment has been put in place by the authorities to warn drivers and encourage safe driving practices. The movement of wildlife is monitored by cameras mounted on smaller bridges that also serve as animal crossing locations, according to the reports.
