Foam Trouble Returns: After Yamuna, Chennai’s Marina Beach Suffers Toxic Foam Outbreak

After Delhi’s Yamuna foam crisis, Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach is now facing a similar environmental concern. Over the past few days, thick layers of white foam have been seen covering large portions of the coastline near Pattinapakkam. The phenomenon, which locals initially mistook for sea froth, is actually the result of chemical and sewage contamination entering the waters through the Adyar River.
According to local fishermen, this is the first time they have witnessed such an alarming buildup of foam along the beach. They believe that the recent shift in wind direction and the increased flow of water in the Adyar River have pushed the froth toward the coast. The foam is reportedly formed due to detergent residues, industrial effluents, and untreated sewage discharged into the river, eventually merging with the Bay of Bengal.
Environmental experts warn that the froth is not just an eyesore but a toxic mix that poses health hazards to both humans and marine life. Direct contact with the foam can cause skin irritation and respiratory issues, while long-term exposure of aquatic species to such pollution can devastate the marine ecosystem.
The incident mirrors the recurring pollution crisis seen in Delhi’s Yamuna, highlighting the urgent need for stricter waste management and water treatment systems. As India continues to urbanize, its rivers and coastlines are paying the price, a stark reminder that environmental negligence comes with lasting consequences.
