According to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, India will probably maintain an economic growth rate of 7 percent or higher in the 2026-27 fiscal year. India is expected to keep up its growth trajectory despite the geopolitical uncertainties and supply chain disruptions caused by the US-Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, she said during her visit to the US, addressing the Indian diaspora in Chicago.

The West Asian war disrupted crucial commodities like petroleum, crude and fertilizers from reaching India, according to her, but the nation was able to find alternative ways to get them.

In spite of a significant increase in international prices, the Finance Minister emphasized that the government has maintained stable fertilizer prices for farmers through subsidies. In addition to continuing systemic reforms and attempting to attract more capital, particularly from abroad, the FM said that India’s economy is expanding.

“We have given ourselves a fiscal discipline path on the fiscal deficit as well. We have fulfilled the trajectory. The last mile that had to be reached by 2025-26, we have reached,” the FM said.

For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, India’s fiscal deficit was 4.4 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). The deficit was 97.5 percent of the government’s revised forecasts, which were announced in February or 15.19 trillion rupees, reports ANI.
