A BLO died by suicide at his home in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. In the video recorded before his death, he stated that he was taking this step due to extreme work pressure related to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The voter roll revision is currently underway in 12 states, and in recent weeks, several BLOs have reportedly taken their own lives due to workload and sustained pressure from senior officials.
The deceased officer has been identified as 46-year-old Sarvesh Singh, an assistant teacher who had been assigned BLO duty on October 7, 2025. A BLO’s primary responsibility includes helping citizens fill out election-related forms and uploading voter details to the designated digital databases.
The video of Singh, believed to have been recorded shortly before his suicide, shows him crying and saying he is unable to complete the assigned work despite putting in constant effort.
On Sunday morning, Singh’s wife, Babli Devi, found him hanging in the storage room of their home, according to official reports. A suicide note was recovered from the spot.
In the handwritten two-page note, Singh detailed the problems that pushed him to take his own life. The note read: “I have been working day and night, but am unable to meet the SIR targets. My nights have become unbearable due to anxiety. I barely sleep for two to three hours. I have four daughters, two of whom are unwell. Please forgive me.”
Senior police officer Ashish Pratap Singh confirmed that the content of the suicide note indicates that Sarvesh could not cope with the burden of BLO duty. Further legal proceedings are underway.
Family members stated that Singh had been under immense stress due to continuous surveys, data verification, and frequent reporting cycles connected to the extensive SIR exercise across Uttar Pradesh and other states.
