Delhi Sees Wettest First Week of August in 15 Years, Heavy Rains Continued

Since 2011, Delhi had its wettest first week of August, with 127 mm of rain falling in the first seven days of the month as continuous rain hammered the city through Friday. Over the course of the day, a number of weather stations reported more than 100 mm of rain. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city had its greatest rainfall on Friday in 15 years for the first week of August.

The weather bureau had previously predicted moderate to severe rainfall throughout the day, with a typically gloomy sky and heavy rain. A wet spell is likely to continue until August 10. The last two days of heavy rain pushed August rainfall well above average at most of Delhi’s main weather stations.

In Delhi-NCR, the continuous rain kept temperatures much lower than average. The temperature was 5.7 to 7.3 degrees below average, ranging from 26.7 to 27.5 degrees Celsius.

With an AQI of 63, the city’s air quality was still deemed to be acceptable. So far this month, Delhi’s air quality has been satisfactory. “The widespread rainfall over Delhi since yesterday has been influenced by the active monsoon trough, which continues to pass through Delhi and other parts of north and east India before extending into the east-central Bay of Bengal. Rainfall activity over Delhi is expected to decrease from tomorrow, with light rain likely over the city during the next two days,” an IMD official said.
