Cyclone Montha has taken several parts of India by the storm, quite literally. With a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100kmph gusting to 110 kmph, it is likely to cause extremely heavy downpour in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana. According to the India Meteorological Department, the extensive depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified and transformed into a severe cyclonic storm. Red alerts have thus been issued for multiple districts in Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.

At 5:30 AM on October 28, cyclone Montha was located over the Bay of Bengal near latitude 14.7°N and longitude 83.1°E.  The cyclone is expected to cause landfall by today evening or night near Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada, between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, about 200 km from Odisha’s Malkangiri.

Due to the non-stop rains, authorities in Andhra Pradesh’s Rajolu constituency have set up 58 main rehabilitation centres, along with additional ones in every village, to accommodate evacuees from coastal areas. Meals have been arranged, post-landfall preparations are in full swing, and the district officials have been taking all the necessary measures to tackle the cyclone’s rough impact. The District Collector Himanshu Shukla stated that heavy rains are expected to continue for the next 12 to 14 hours. In addition, 19 relief centres have been made operational, housing 771 people. There is no major breach of tanks or river overflow reported so far.

Disaster management protocols are fully active. The Chennai Meteorological Department also warned the fishermen to anchor their boats onshore, with hundreds of vessels pulled safely onto the beach and fishing nets secured to prevent any major damage. Continuous monitoring and disaster management protocols remain crucial in ensuring communities are protected during this challenging time. Everyone in the affected areas should stay informed and heed warnings from meteorological departments to navigate safely through the cyclone’s aftermath.
