The Jammu and Kashmir Education Ministry has ordered the precautionary closure of all schools and colleges across the Kashmir division for the rest of the week amid widespread protests in the Valley.
Officials said the decision was taken in view of the unrest triggered by the killing of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a strike reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel. The shutdown aims to maintain public order as demonstrations intensified in several districts following reports of Khamenei’s assassination earlier this week.
Under the orders issued by the Education Ministry, educational institutions will remain closed as security agencies tighten arrangements across sensitive areas. The University of Kashmir has already postponed all examinations scheduled for this week.
Security has been heightened in Srinagar, with key locations such as Lal Chowk and Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) sealed to prevent large gatherings. Additional security personnel have been deployed in vulnerable areas, and movement has been restricted in parts of the city.
High-speed mobile internet services continue to remain suspended across the Valley, with access limited to 2G speeds.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealed for restraint while acknowledging public sentiment.
“We must ensure that people in Jammu and Kashmir who are mourning are allowed to do so peacefully,” he said, urging police and civil authorities to avoid excessive force or unnecessary restrictions.
