Cabinet Approves Rs. 2,585 Crore Small Hydro Power Development Scheme
Energy has great potential to make an economy strong. Now the Cabinet has cleared the Rs. 2,585 crore small hydropower development schemes as per the reports.
To support the development of 1,500 MW of renewable capacity, the Union Cabinet authorized a modest hydro power development plan on Wednesday with an investment of Rs. 2,585 crore. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed reporters following the Union Cabinet meeting here that the ‘Small Hydro Power Development scheme’ has been given the go ahead by the Cabinet with a total investment of Rs. 2,585 crore.
This is a significant decision for the nation from an environmental standpoint, the minister said. The projects will be built as river projects, avoiding dams and population displacement.

The capacity of these projects ranges from 1 MW to 25 MW. The initiatives will be carried out over a period of five years, ending in 2030-2031. The initiative is anticipated to bring in Rs. 15,000 crore in investment in minor hydro projects. According to Vaishnaw, there are 7,133 possible locations for small hydro projects around the nation, with a combined potential output of 21,000 MW. There are currently 5,100 MW of small hydro power plants running at 1,196 locations throughout the nation.
