The rare Neelakurinji flowers have appeared in great quantities on the Korandakadu hills close to Mattupetty in Munnar. Scientifically known as Strobilanthes kunthiana, Neelakurinji is well-known for its distinctive blooming cycle. The plant blossoms about once every 12 years in various Western Ghats populations. Thousans of blossoms emerge practically at the same time during this short window of time, putting on a breathtaking natural display.

According to reports, the plant has an impressive life cycle. Following flowering and seed formation, the adult plant expires. Before blooming together, the following generation gradually expands over a few years. Neelakurinji flowers are uncommon and much awaited due to their gregarious flowering, a synchronized mass flowering.

Munnar’s diverse tribes adhere to varying blooming calendars. Due to the fact that the Chokramudi and Mattupetty population last bloomed in 2014, the next flowering year is expected to be 2026, not an unusual early bloom.
