On May 31, 2026, Legendary singer Suman Kalyanpur breathed her last at the age of 89 at her Mumbai residence. The renowned playback singer was laid to rest with full state honours in the city, with tributes pouring in across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too paid tribute, remembering her timeless contribution to Indian music. As shared by author and close associate Mangala Khadilkar, the veteran singer breathed her last around 8 pm at her Lokhandwala home due to age-related ailments. 

Suman Kalyanpur Breathes Her Last at 89, Reason Revealed

On Monday, June 1, Suman Kalyanpur’s last rites were performed at the Santacruz (Pawan Hans) cremation, Mumbai. The Maharashtra government mandated that her funeral be held with full state honours as an appreciation of her remarkable contribution to Indian music and film. Moreover, her mortal remains were wrapped in the Indian tricolour, and Mumbai Police officers gave a ceremonial salute before her daughter, Charu, carried out the last rites.

During her cremation, the attendees sang Rang Rahen Na Rahen Hum, Meheka Karenge from the 1966’s Mamta while the funeral pyre was lit. Her voice truly defined generations. Popular for a melodious voice and classical finesse, the singer’s chartbuster songs included Shammi Kapoor, Mumtaz’s Aajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche, Shashi Kapoor’s Na Na Karte Pyar Tumhin Se, Sadhana’s Tumne Pukara Aur Hum Chale Aaye, and so many more. Her sad demise has left the entire music industry mourning. Her absence will be truly felt for years to come.
