On the auspicious occasion of the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Riteish Deshmukh took to Instagram to share the first poster of his upcoming film Raja Shivaji. Slated to release on May 1, 2026, Deshmukh directed the historical epic and will essay the role of the Maratha warrior king. The first-look poster features the actor, depicting Chhatrapati Shivaji in a striking and gritty pose.
After 2022’s Ved’s successful theatrical run, Raja Shivaji marks Ritesh Deshmukh’s second foray into directing. The period drama is positioned as a pan-India spectacular that will emphasize less on the action and more on the renowned leader’s emotional and strategic depth. Here are further details of the upcoming film!
On February 19, 2026, Riteish Deshmukh unveiled the first look of Raja Shivaji. The caption of the post read, “When darkness longed for light, a flame rose high. When history stood still, a young warrior chose to rewrite it. When a land yearned for honour, a son took an oath, and Swarajya was born. (sic)” The poster showcases Deshmukh, portraying the titular character. The setting sun and smoke billows from the battlefield set the backdrop of the poster. Moreover, Deshmukh sports his warrior gear, holding the iconic Bhagwa Dhwaj (orange flag) in one hand and a sword in the other. Undoubtedly, the poster speaks volume of the film’s visual language.
The periodic drama is expected to chronicle the life of young rebel Shivaji Maharaj, who rose against long-established empires and laid the groundwork for self-rule, or Swarajya. Alongside Deshmukh, the film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Fardeen Khan, and Bhagyashree in pivotal roles. Additionally, renowned artists Ajay-Atul have lent their voices while crafting the melodies for the film.
Bankrolled by Jyoti Deshpande and Geneilia Deshmukh in association with Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company, the film will be released in six languages, including Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The tale of the people’s king will be reaching all parts of the nation on the special occasion of Maharashtra Day.
