Riteish Deshmukh is all geared up to set the screen ablaze with Raja Shivaji. The actor has poured his heart and soul into essaying the titular character, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Slated to arrive in cinemas on 1 May 2026, the film is helmed as well as written by Deshmukh himself. After a few months of anticipation, on April 20, Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company finally dropped the trailer for the historical epic chronicling the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film’s trailer was unveiled at a grand event in Mumbai, attended by the entire cast and crew. It is nothing short of a visual treat to watch the 47-year-old actor portray the role of Raja Shivaji.

For the unversed, the historic drama will be released worldwide in Hindi as well as Marathi. On the other hand, it will be locking horns at the international box office with the much-awaited The Devil Wears Prada 2. Raja Shivaji traces the ups and downs of young Shivaji Bhonsale, who challenged the might of established empires to find the Maratha kingdom and lay the groundwork for “Swarajya” (self-rule) during a turbulent period of Indian history. As director, lead actor, writer, and producer of the project, Riteish Deshmukh aims to tell the saga of the leader’s life, particularly emphasizing his strategic acumen and valor. 

The trailer takes us down memory lane, starting right from a brief glimpse of Shivaji’s journey as a child and a warrior. It takes us through his early years, when he first learnt of the concept of ‘Swarajya,’ to growing up as a fearless and ferocious warrior striving to attain Swarajya for the Maratha empire. He fights against all enemies and rivals, including the Mughal Empire and Adilshahi.

The lead actor also took to his social media timelines to share the trailer of the much-anticipated film. His son will portray a younger version of Shivaji. The action-packed drama boasts a stellar cast including Sanjay Dutt as Afzal Khan, Abhishek Bachchan as his elder brother, Vidya Balan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Boman Irani, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, Amol Gupte, and wife Genelia Deshmukh as Sai Bai. With Ajay-Atul’s music and cinematography by Santosh Sivan, Jio Studios presents the Mumbai Film Company production, with Jyoti Deshpande and Genelia Deshmukh joining in as producers.

For the context, the release date, May 1, coincides with Maharashtra Day, a holiday commemorating the formation of the western Indian state of Maharashtra from which the titular ruler hailed.
