Helmed by Richie Mehta, Phoolan is set to premiere at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to be held in Sept. 2026. Based on the dread Chambal dacoit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi, it is a Prime Video Original film whose release date is still kept under wraps. 

The Hindi-language movie will be screened at the festival on Sept.16 at the Princess of Wales Theatre as part of the Special Presentations section. The prestigious festival will kickstart from September 10 to 20, 2026. Here are more details!

Prime Video’s Phoolan to Premiere at Toronto International Film Festival 2026

Filmmaker Richie Mehta’s directorial, Phoolan, is scheduled to screen on Sept. 16 at 6 PM ET at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre. Based on I, 1997’s Phoolan: The Autobiography of India’s Bandit Queen, the film revisits a pivotal chapter in the life of Phoolan Devi. It chronicles the journey of Phoolan Devi when thousands of armed men surrounded a village in an attempt to kill her.

Moreover, the film is set against the heartland of India, following the journey of an impoverished 17-year-old girl who went on to become one of the country’s most infamous bandits. According to the makers, the story focuses on a brutal 48-hour siege mounted by more than 2,000 armed men.

Bankrolled by Shareen Mantri Kedia, Kishor Arora, Kanwal Kohli and Mehta under the banner of Namah Pictures, the film stars newcomer Sneha Kumari, who appears in the titular role, alongside Anurag Thakur, Vikram Pratap Singh, Aakash Dahiya, Prateek Pachori, and Dev Dutt Budholiya.
