The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the theme and dress code for the 2026 Met Gala, offering clear direction for one of fashion’s most scrutinised red carpet events. Each year, the Met Gala theme influences both the exhibition at the Costume Institute and the evening’s most talked-about looks. With powerhouse co-chairs including Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams, this year is set to be a mix of avant-garde design and cultural artistry.

The Met Gala 2026 is set to be held on May 4, the first Monday of May. For 2026, “Fashion Is Art” encourages celebrated icons to consider the many ways that designers use the body as their blank canvas.

‘Fashion Is Art: Met Gala 2026 Theme Celebrates Worldwide Artistry

On February 23, 2026, Vogue shared that this year’s theme is ‘Fashion Is Art’. Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute and curator of the new exhibition, shared, “What connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body. It’s the common thread throughout the whole museum, which is really what the initial idea for the exhibition was.”

As per the announcement, the Costume Institute’s spring 2026 exhibition will explore depictions of the dressed body across the Met’s vast collection, pairing garments with artworks to reveal the inherent relationship between clothing and the body. For the unversed, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos are honorary chairs, while Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz are the host committee co-chairs.
