Everybody loves celebrating Christmas with family. So does Kate. But her story of life is slightly different from the rest of the world. On November 12, Netflix added Merry Little Ex-Mas, a soft, light, cheesy rom-com to its list of Holiday universe. It follows a recently divorced Kate, portrayed by Alicia Silverstone, who is looking forward to a picture-perfect family Christmas for the last time before she sells her house, The Mothership. However, things don’t go as per her plan when her ex-husband Everett, a character played by Oliver Hudson, introduces his new girlfriend to the family, aiming to celebrate Christmas.
Kate is a city girl at heart who yearns to be an architect, with a passion for conserving the environment. However, for the sake of love, she sacrificed her dreams and moved to the quaint town of Winterlight. On the other hand, Everett, her ex-husband, is a doctor by profession and hence, a workaholic. Since he is always immersed in his professional work, it has caused a rift in his marital life.
Jameela Jamil, who plays the character of his girlfriend, is the founder of a non-profit organisation, whereas Pierson Fodé, portraying the role of Chet, is Kate’s new love interest with multiple jobs in Winterlight.
Kate and Everett, who were once long-time sweethearts, are now trying to maneuver through a mature divorce with their son Gabriel (Wilder Hudson) and daughter (Emily Hall). It is indeed exciting to see how the parents strive to give their college-age children one last family Christmas together.
Merry Little Ex-Mas has earned mixed reviews, with some appraising the lead character’s performance while the rest calling it a bland addition to their pile of festive fare. However, it is no news that the reviews differ from person to person. It is a corny and super-cheesy Netflix rom-com, which you may or may not like.
