Karan Johar Announces Spy Thriller Based on R&AW Founder R N Kao, Set to Hit Theatres in 2028

On Monday, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions took to its social media timelines to announce its upcoming film based on Indian Spymaster Rameshwar Nath Kao. Aiming for an Aug. 11, 2028 release, the production house will be teaming with Leo Media Collective on a theatrical feature. On the special occasion of R&AW’s 58th anniversary, Karan Johar confirmed the making of the spy thriller. Based on the book Gentleman Spymaster by Nitin Gokhale, the sneak peek has left the netizens intrigued. Take a look!

Taking to his social media timeline, Karan Johar shared a captivating glimpse of the spy thriller, focusing on R&AW Founder R. N. Kao. The caption of the post read, “He built the invisible…but history remembers his impact. Today marks 58 years of R&AW and we’re thrilled to announce our film on the story of RN Kao, the man who operated in the shadows & brought to light an institution we know today as R&AW – and its first mission.Based on the book Gentleman Spymaster by Nitin Gokhale, his story comes alive on big screens on 11 August, 2028.” 

Through a statement, the renowned filmmaker also shared that Leo media has painstakingly been researching and dramatising the film’s narrative for the past two years. As a team, they want the film to be a gripping story based on facts. Moreover, they aim to pay homage to RAW and honour their milestone year with a solid motion picture. 

R&AW is India’s primary external intelligence agency, established in 1968 to consolidate the country’s foreign intelligence operations, which were previously handled by the Intelligence Bureau. The film will chronicle the saga between 1955 and 1971, tracing the lead-up to R&AW’s formation and its first mission during the 1971 war against Pakistan. 

For the unversed, Kao was widely regarded within Indian intelligence circles as a formative figure in the country’s espionage apparatus. Additionally, his strategic approach was highly praised. All in all, more details regarding the film’s cast, director, and other crew members are yet to be revealed. The announcement itself has sparked curiosity among fans and cinephiles.
