On Monday, HarperCollins Publishers announced the passing of the bestselling British novelist and former politician at 86. The writer sold more than 300 million books in his five-decade career. He “suddenly and peacefully” breathed his last at his home between writing sessions. Renowned for pacy thrillers like his 1976 debut Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less and 1979’s Kane & Abel. His final novel, Adam and Eve, was due to be published today.

Through an official statement, Kate Elton, HarperCollins’ UK CEO and Archer’s editor, shared, “We’re all devastated to have lost a writer who has brought joy to generations of readers – and a true friend.” Jeffrey Archer’s life story was a saga of ambition, power, money, and sexual intrigue, with more unexpected twists and turns than one of his novels. His political career was paused in 2001 when he was jailed for four years for perjury and perverting the course of justice. He also sued a newspaper who claimed he had slept with a sex worker, winning 500,000 pounds in damages. He served as an MP for five years before becoming Conservative Party deputy chairman.
On the other hand, his editor, Kate Elton, called him a “master storyteller and an editor’s dream”. He was due to speak about his final novel this weekend at the Cheltenham Literature Festival and had recently appeared on radio shows to promote the book. Moreover, The UK’s Sun newspaper reported that he had been signing books for fans at an event in London on Sunday.
