Eva Marie Saint was the oldest surviving Oscar winner and one of the last remaining stars of Hollywood’s golden age. She began her career in live television in the late 1940s. Over her seven-decade career, the ever-elegant Saint caught the eyes of influential filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock and Elia Kazan. Throughout her life’s trajectory, she built an impressive resume in film as well as television, which also earned her an Emmy.
Saint’s performance in “On The Waterfront” was her film debut and earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Saint could have excelled in her career and achieved greater heights in Hollywood but chose to raise her family with director Jeffrey Hayden. Their marriage lasted for 65 years, until he died in 2016, and she is survived by their two children.
Indeed, her eldest son, Darrell, was born just two days after she won her Oscar. In 2006, the actress made a major comeback to the screen as Superman’s adoptive mother in the blockbuster “Superman Returns.”
