Dorothy Box Office Collection Day 1: Karthik Subbaraj’s Drama Mints Rs 90 Lakhs With Rave Reviews from the Audience

Starring Keerthy Suresh, Sananth, and Rishikanth, “Dorothy” finally hit the theatres on Sept. 25. It opened to most rave reviews from early viewers, with many praising its LGBTQIA+ themes and distinctive narrative. On the other hand, some called it an audacious homophobia-inducing drama. Despite the mixed reactions, on the first day, the film raked in Rs 90 lakhs. 

Positioned as one of the most rustic Tamil movies in recent times, it is a run-of-the-mill story of two friends and a woman they love. The film is set in a rural setting where caste, class, toxic masculinity, and violence reign supreme.

On its opening day, “Dorothy” earned Rs 90 lakhs by running across 749 shows with 33 percent occupancy. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, on the second day, as of 3 PM IST, the film added Rs 38 lakhs by running 367 shows, registering 30 percent occupancy. This brings the film’s net collection to Rs 1.28 crore in India. Talking about the gross collection, it stands at Rs 1.50 crore. As the weekend rolls over, the film may gain some momentum at the box office.

For the unversed, “Dorothy” gained international recognition following its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it received a standing ovation in the Centrepiece section. Helmed by Karthik Subbaraj, the movie has drawn considerable attention for exploring LGBTQ+ themes and queer representation within mainstream Tamil cinema.
