Remembering Hrishikesh Mukherjee : Filmmaker Who Made Middle Cinema, Most Loved & Evergreen

The cinematic era in which we are living is equally distributed between commercial and Art Cinema. In particular, the year 2025, witnessed remarkable heights of success in terms of art cinema or indie cinema from India to the global stage.
When we talk about such films which are attaining success both in festival circuits and in theaters, how can we forget to cherish the remarkable filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee is known as the pioneer of Middle Cinema. His career spanned the decade from 1950s to 1990s. His classic era was between the 1970s . Who can forget Anand, Chupke Chupke, Guddi, Abhimaan, Bawarchi, Namak Haraam, Gol Maal, Musafir, Satyakaam, Mili and many such gems.
Though the era of 70s & 80s saw dominance of Action & “Angry Young Man” and heavy dramatic ambience in Indian cinema.
But in that same era, what drew audiences was Hrishishi Da’s stories with simplicity & beauty in everyday moments.
His films’ USP was to touch the subtle moments and behavior with humour and wits. In his universe every character whether cameo or lead left a remarkable message and impact.
He brilliantly found a balance between commercial and art cinema. His narratives captivate the heart with simple yet powerful messages told in humorous manner.
His legacy includes Padma Vibhushan, Dada Sahab Phalke, National Film Awards , Filmfare and the list is uncountable. In his career span ,he directed around 42 films and he was the head of CBFC also. Filmmakers like him are just a gem for the history of Indian cinema whose life and legacy can be celebrated forever.
