It is indeed a celebratory moment for the Manipuri-language film Boong, which won the Best Children’s & Family Film honor at the 79th British Academy Film Awards. The film competed with big international nominees including Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootropolis 2.

Boong follows the tale of a young boy named Boong, a role essayed by Gugun Kipgen. The narrative chronicles the boy’s efforts to bring his family together. He feels restoring his family will bring happiness to his mother, Mandakini, portrayed by Bala Hijam. Young Boong was determined to find his missing father, which led him to embark on a journey with his best friend Raju, played by Angom Sanamatum.
The big win at BAFTA 2026 is indeed a significant milestone for Indian cinema, as the storytelling format from Northeastern India earned global acclaim. Farhan Akhtar, who also shares a two-decade-old association with director Lakshmipriya Devi, backed the film. After the big honor on an international stage, PM Narendra Modi, actress Kangana Ranaut, and others applauded the landmark win. For the unversed, the film was released in theatres in September 2025, but there is no confirmed OTT platform in India so far.
