Ola, the electric mobility company known for its scooters and ride services, is preparing to unveil what could be its most unexpected product yet: something that isn’t a vehicle. Ola Electric on Thursday the company has forayed into the country’s Rs 1 lakh crore battery energy storage systems market, which is projected to grow to over Rs 3 lakh crore by 2030.
The move, founder Bhavish Aggarwal, said, marks “a new era where power becomes intelligent, portable, and personal.” On Instagram, he teased the launch with the Hindi word “Shakti” meaning “power” in bold Devanagari script, a hint of the company’s intent to ground its innovation in Indian identity while competing globally.
The Ola Shakti battery aims to do more than just store power. It integrates smart software to optimize energy use at home, charging during off-peak hours and providing backup when needed. It’s a bold stride toward what Aggarwal calls a “decentralized energy future,” where every household becomes both a consumer and a producer of power.
Industry analysts see this as a natural evolution for Ola. After mastering electric mobility, the company now targets the ecosystem that fuels it: clean, storable energy. “Ola isn’t just selling batteries,” said an analyst from Bernstein Research. “It’s selling energy independence.”
The launch comes at a time when India is accelerating its clean energy ambitions, with the government backing local manufacturing and green tech through incentives and subsidies.
Aggarwal’s ambitions, however, stretch beyond policy or profit. “We built scooters. Now we’re building the power that runs them and everything else,” he said.
In a nation where power cuts still flicker through millions of homes, Ola Shakti might not just be a product launch it could be the spark of a new kind of empowerment.
