From 1.8 Lakh Salary to ‘Broke’: A Techie’s Financial Wake-Up Call Following a Medical Emergency
A techie who was earning a good salary per month expresses his experience when he realized the actual medical cost and how it led him to be almost broke. He has shared his views on social media and many people are reacting to his experience, stating that they also went through a similar experience and reality check.
A Bengaluru techie, who makes Rs. 1.8 lakh per month, has discussed how a sudden family medical emergency brought home the fact that a high income doesn’t always ensure financial security.
Two years ago, I thought I was crushing it, earning Rs. 1.8L a month in Bangalore, living in a nice gated society and aggressively dumping Rs. 80k into monthly SIPs,” he said. He mentioned that he had a medical emergency and the hospital demanded a Rs. 2.5L deposit upfront for the ICU. “That night broke me. My main credit card was maxed out from buying a laptop, my savings account had barely Rs. 32,000 and my mutual fund money was locked behind TPA delays and redemption times,” he mentioned.
I was living like a fake rich techie making ₹1.8L/month, until an ICU emergency exposed how broke I actually was.

“I spent 1:30 am frantically calling distant relatives to borrow cash via UPI while sitting in a cold hospital hallway. Earning a high salary meant nothing when I had zero liquid cash. I am very curious to know about your thoughts and experience and how are you managing this?” he expressed further.
Many financial realities people don’t talk about, but some are expressing themselves on social media with their own personal experiences. Young professionals engaged in a larger discussion about financial planning and emergency reserves after reading the post.
