The layoffs, expected to begin this week, come as Amazon seeks to reduce expenses and adjust for overhiring that occurred during the pandemic’s peak demand.
In 2022, Amazon laid off around 27,000 employees. The company currently employs 1.55 million people worldwide, with nearly 10% of them in corporate roles.
Over the past two years, Amazon has been trimming jobs in small phases across several divisions, including Devices, Communications, and Podcasting. The latest round of cuts is expected to affect departments such as Human Resources, Operations, Devices and Services, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
While the exact reason behind the new round of layoffs remains unclear, sources familiar with the matter said the final number could change depending on Amazon’s shifting financial priorities. Earlier reports also suggested that the Human Resources division could be the hardest hit, with cuts estimated at around 15%.
